Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy
At COHEA, we are committed to maintaining a focused, respectful, and safe learning environment for all students. To support student learning and minimize distractions, COHEA follows Florida’s requirements regarding student use of cell phones and other wireless communication devices.
Effective July 1, 2025, Florida law established updated restrictions on the use of wireless communication devices by students in elementary, middle, and high schools. Under the law, elementary and middle school students may not use wireless communication devices during the school day. High school students may not use these devices during instructional time unless a teacher expressly directs their use for educational purposes.
What Devices Are Covered?
The policy applies to wireless communication and personal electronic devices, including:
- Cell phones
- Headphones and earbuds
- AirPods
- Smartwatches
- Smart cameras and similar devices
- Other personal electronic devices covered by school policy
Students should follow COHEA’s expectations for when and where these devices may be used.
Why This Policy Matters
Limiting personal electronic devices during instructional time helps students stay engaged in classroom activities, communicate with teachers and classmates, and focus on their education. It also helps reduce distractions and supports a positive learning environment.
Important Exceptions
Florida law provides exceptions for certain circumstances. Device use may be permitted when expressly authorized for educational purposes or when required under a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), 504 accommodation plan, or qualifying medical documentation.
Students and families should review COHEA’s student handbook and school rules for specific procedures, expectations, and consequences related to electronic device use.
